A team of neurocientists working at UMD, including NACS alumna Dr. Jessica Wess, researchers Dr. Amal Isaiah and Dr. Paul Watkins, and NACS faculty member Dr. Patrick Kanold recently published a paper in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. This published study is the first to identify a mechanism that could explain an early link between sound input and cognitive function. The paper is titled, "Subplate neurons are the first cortical neurons to respond to sensory stimuli," and is available to read online at the following link: http://www.pnas.org/content/114/47/12602.full
