Predicting, perceiving, behaving – The neural dynamics of auditory cognition

My research on auditory cognition centers on the listening mind—its neurobiological dynamics and its role in human communication. In our work, we assume that listening and speech comprehension in the human brain (1) extend far beyond the classic auditory and language regions, and (2) are shaped by domain-general psychological and neural principles. In this talk, I will present recent behavioral and neuroimaging evidence that tests these ideas and raises questions for the years ahead: At the level of sensation and perception, how can we better account for variability in listening behavior—both between individuals and within the same individual from moment to moment? And at the level of metacognition, how does monitoring our own auditory perception influence auditory cognition and communication?
