Mason received a B.S. in biochemistry at Mercyhurst University, in Erie, PA. He earned a Ph.D. in neuroscience under the direction of Dr. Charles Anderson at West Virginia University. Mason is currently a postdoctoral associate in Dr. Melissa Caras' laboratory in the Department of Biology, where he studies auditory perception and learning.
